Health Practice in Canada
Health practice is the application of scientific knowledge and skills to the
identification and management of health problems. It involves a wide range of
professions and disciplines, including public health nurses sports.suratkhabar, nutritionists,
environmental health specialists, and physicians.

There are many factors that contribute to an individual’s health status, ranging from
the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other substances to the social and physical
environment. These factors can affect an individual’s risk for infectious diseases,
chronic disease, and injuries.
The role of the health care system in addressing these determinants is an important
part of public health practice. The system can improve health outcomes by reducing
health inequities and improving access to healthcare. It can also reduce the burden
of disease on the health care system by increasing access to prevention and
treatment services.
A number of initiatives have been developed in the past few decades to restructure
and improve public health practice in Canada. These include the Institute of
Medicine (IOM) report, The Future of Public Health (1988), the Canadian Public
Health Association’s Core Functions Steering Committee (1994), and a national
strategy for improving public health in the 21st century.
These initiatives have influenced the nature of public health practice as a whole. It is
now considered to be a “political” form of practice that depends on social values and
popular support for its ends and means.
In the middle of the twentieth century, a major concern in public health practice was
the identification and response to infectious disease threats. Since then, the health
practice agenda has broadened to address a wide range of health issues, including
emerging and re-emerging conditions.

Another significant change in the practice of public health has been the focus on
community-based practices that involve a wide range of local agencies and other
partners. These activities include the development of community assessments of
health needs and coordinated plans to address them. These efforts have evolved
slowly over the 1990s, but have now become a standard component of public health
practice in many communities.
The development of these initiatives has been a challenge to public health
practitioners in the past, largely because they have required the reorganization of
health departments and the creation of new roles for those agencies. These new
roles often required the re-training of staff and the establishment of infrastructures
that were not available in most local health departments.
During the 1980s and 1990s, health professionals began to see the role of
community-based services as an essential part of the health care system. These
services can be used to promote and prevent disease and to strengthen community
capacity for health-promoting behaviors, such as regular exercise and healthy eating
habits.
In addition, these services can help to improve the quality of life in communities by
addressing some of the most pressing social determinants of health. These can

include poverty, inadequate housing and employment, education, access to safe
water, air, food, and transportation, and other factors that may affect an individual’s
health.
